Duration of Project: 1/6/2018 – 31/5/2020
Research Summary: There have been many fatalities for people performing switching of HV (high voltage) switchgears. Therefore, there is a need for an automation which is easily transported and carried into substations to enable switching personnel to perform switching from a distance away from the switchgear. Most fatalities upon investigation are caused by neglect by the switching personnel or by the last person who handled the switchgears. For the former case there was one incident in SEB (Sarawak Energy Berhad) in 2014 where a SEB staff saw that the oil level in the switchgear was low but presumed that it was enough to switch the HV switchgear safely. The switchgear exploded and the personnel had second degree burns. For the latter case in Semanjung Malaysia, four staff of TNB (Tenaga National Berhad) were killed as an 11kV switchgear exploded; the root cause was discovered to be a fuse jumped with a copper wire by the last switching personnel.
