Research Summary:  Recently, photovoltaic based distributed generation (PVDG) has drawn a lot of attention worldwide due to their contribution in voltage improvement, power loss reduction, reliability elevation and carbon emission reduction.  However, one should be aware that the inappropriate ways of placing PVDG can lead to the problems related to the power quality issues, reliability and voltage regulation.  Therefore, various works have been done on optimal PVDG placement to achieve different purposes.  The objectives of this research is to develop a new technique in improving the Lightning Search Algorithm (LSA) to increase efficiency and also to determine the optimal locations of PVDG in power network using improved LSA.  The optimization will be done based on the objective function which minimizes the power loss and voltage fluctuation of the power grid.  The optimal PVDG locations should create minimum power quality problems to the power grid.
