Research Summary:  This study will investigate the operating conditions of the physico-chemical treatrment process required for removal of probable heavy metals, organic and inorganic contaminants present in the Rajang river water.  In addition, removal efficiency in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC), biodegradability (BOD5/COD ratio) improvement, Total Nitrogen (TN), Ammonia (NH3-N), Total Phosphate (TP) amongst other parameters would be monitored during the treatment process.  Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy will be used to measure modification of organic bonds of the contaminants.  X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern of the granular activated carbon (GAC) before and after usage will be observed.  Kinetic models including pseudo-first order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion will be evaluated.
