Research Summary: There are two ideas. The standard Civil engineering proposal is to build a gravity feed tower there with cement. Water can be drawn from the river which is 1.5 km from the village. Cement and bricks are available from Serian. Another idea suggested by Dr. Lee Man Djun is that currently there are pumps which activate to start only if the water pressure is low in the piping system. If that is available, it will be the optimum and faster solution. Then we need a few rolls of HDPE pipe, joints and faucets to run the pipes to each of the 38 homes in this village. Standard drills and other construction tools are needed to run the HDPE pipes into the 38 homes’ cement or wood walls. We will hire some plumbers to try to finish the job in a few days. We will of course only purchase the best quality pump like Baldor brand which in Western Digital, Kuching have been known to last for 21 years of continuous operation; comparatively most pumps in Sarawak last only a maximum of 6 years. If we have enough budget, we will also install a water filter for the whole village. We need to educate the more technical people in the village to maintain the pump and water pipe system. Most of this education is via getting these technical villagers to follow in the construction phase. Some training will be done with a computer and projector. Maintenance under this grant must carry on for a period of two years.
